BEIRUT, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) — Two people were killed and two others injured Monday morning in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a border village in southern Lebanon, Lebanese military and medical sources said.
The Lebanese Ministry of Health said in a statement that “the Israeli enemy’s raid on the village of Mays al-Jabal resulted in two martyrs in the vicinity of the village’s cemetery.”
Anonymous military sources said that an Israeli drone targeted a group of young men who were digging a grave in the cemetery in the southeast village of Mays al-Jabal with two air-to-ground missiles, killing two people and wounding two others.
They added that Israeli drones and warplanes on Monday carried out five airstrikes on four villages and towns in southern Lebanon, and Israeli artillery threw 25 shells on six towns and villages in the eastern and central sectors of the border area.
The Lebanese armed group Hezbollah announced in a statement Monday morning that its military wing, the Islamic Resistance, had launched an attack with suicide drones on an army base in the upper Galilee region, northern Israel, in response to the Israeli attacks.
Tensions are high in Lebanon following Israel’s attack on Dahieh in Beirut’s southern suburbs, which resulted in the death of a senior Hezbollah military commander, Fouad Shokor, and seven civilians. Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah has threatened a definite and painful response to the Israeli raid. ■
